Unit 20: Music & Sound for the Moving Image - Videos

Honda Foley FX Track

Accompanying Write-Up

I began to soundtrack this visual by finding and creating foley effects, and synchronising those with the visual so that it looked like the collision of two objects on screen had created the sound I had positioned. I knew the majority of the sounds I'd have to find or make would be metal on metal and this helped me to refine my searching somewhat. I created effects myself using ES2, when I couldn't find an adequate one to use. For example the sound effect for the windscreen wiper flying through the air was made in ES2, with LFO rate controlling cutoff to simulate a rotation in mid air, and also using noise as well as another oscillator wave for the whooshing sound of air resistance. I also found an atmospheric sound which made the foley track feel like it was in the room we see in the visual, as it looks like it would be reflective with the hard surfaces and wood floor, so adding the atmosphere sample and some reverb of this sort of room size to my foley made it seem like it was in this room.

Once all foley effects were made, synchronised and at what I deemed to be at a realistic volume, I set about composing some music to accompany it, following the brief I'd outlined earlier for the style of the music.  I began with percussion, trying to make sure that as the foley effects were synched to the visual and couldn't move, that the rhythm of my track didn't interrupt these sounds, and it didn't all sound clashing from each other. I then added the synths which I wanted to sound a bit industrial but still melodic, and then a bassline, and the jazzy keys toward the middle of the track.
